Essence: Shaping Future Leaders

Essence has been envisaged to be a three day Youth Summit, which aims at shaping future leaders through constructive discussions and interactive workshops on Youth and Policy Making. The vision is to engage some of the most creative minds in the country in coming up with solutions to a variety of issues that come under the ambit of policy making.

The Summit aims to be a unique learning experience for the participants. It includes participatory workshops, interactive discussions, model building exercises, a field visit and lectures by who's who from media, politics and thinktanks. With such activities on the first two days, the final day of the summit shall culminate in STEP: an open public policy debate between participants, dignitaries in the field, media personalities, NGOs, civic bodies and other stakeholders.

Structure

Twenty four shortlisted entries shall be invited to participate in the Youth Summit. The selected students shall be given a specific micro problem in governance for which they will have to provide provide a possible solution. The participants shall be evaluated on the basis of their solutions.

The first day of the summit shall have lectures and panel discussions by speakers who have for long been associated with the field of policy making. The sessions of lectures shall be supplements by interactive workshops oriented towards leadership development for policy -making.

The second day of the summit shall have a field visit to provide a in-depth perspective to the young leaders about the actual problems encountered in governance. The final day of the summit shall see the participants engage in a public debate with a panel of journalists, politicians, administrators and civil society activists.

Arun Shourie:

Arun Shourie is among India's best known commentators on current and political affairs. Born in Jalandhar, Punjab (1941), he studied at St. Stephen's College in Delhi and then obtained his doctorate in Economics from Syracuse University, USA.

Among other portfolios, he held the office of the Minister of Disinvestment, Communications and Information Technology in Mr. Atal Bihari Vajpayee's cabinet. He is the recepient of numerous national and international awards, including the Magsaysay Award and one of India’s highest civilian awards, the Padma Bhushan.

A: Any student enrolled in a undergraduate or graduate programme in a recognized academic institution is eligible to participate.

Q: Are group entries allowed?

A: The students shall be selected on the basis of individual essay on the above mentioned topic. Group entries are not allowed.

Q: Will we be provided accomodation?

A: Yes. All the selected students can register at the hospitality portal for accomodation request.
