Classical Instrumental

Amruthavarshini

Amruthavarshini (or Malhar in Hindustaani) - The raaga that is so powerful, it brings rain when sung.
Come this Saarang and get drenched in the heavenly showers of music. Classical Music @ Saarang has taken a new Avathar - Amruthavarshini.
It goes beyond a competition... It is a Musical Battle for proving one's worth. Where the winds of Classical Music blow from all parts of India.. Where the best is crowned but everybody wins, and takes back with them the treasure of Gyana, from each other and the Interactive Judges - The Masters. So come prepared for the musical tempest.

Rules

  • Artistes with B-high or higher grades in their respective fields in the AIR are not allowed to participate as this competition is meant for amateurs and semi-professionals.
  • Hindustani and Carnatic will be judged together, mostly by judges who are Carnatic musicians.
  • Cell phones should be switched off in the hall. Violation of this by participants or those accompanying them could lead to their disqualification.
  • Please move only between performances to avoid disturbances.
  • We will make available an electronic sruti box. No other instruments will be made available.
  • Judges' decision shall be final in all respects & shall be accepted without question.
  • Registration will be conducted at the Hospi Desk on the date of the competition. Pre-registration is not necessary. Late registration by more than half an hour after commencement might be rejected.

Non-Percussion

  • All instruments will be judged together.
  • One person can participate only once.
  • Regarding the pieces that can be played, the same rules as those for vocal prelims apply.

Time limit: 8 minutes, though this might change depending on the number of participants.

Percussion

  • Electronic instruments are not allowed.
  • The participants will be required to give a list of three talams in which they are prepared to play a thani avarthanam or a solo piece. The judges may ask them to play one more tala from the list provided.
  • Participants may also be required to recite the korvais or other pieces played on judges' demand.
  • Participants may play in Carnatic/Hindustani style. However, they will not be judged separately.
  • Time limit: 8 minutes, though this might change depending on the number of participants. Please stick to the time limit.
  • Any sort of assistance to aid rhythm like music, rhythm clocks etc. are not allowed.

Please note that there will not be separate a preliminary round for the instrumental part
