No gathering of teenagers and twenty-somethings anywhere in the world is complete without Music. And at Saarang, by Music we mean the whole plethora of genres you could possibly know, and a bit more. Whether it’s a heavy Maiden riff on the guitar, a soft love ballad or even a brilliant rendition of Carnatic raga on the violin, we guarantee that there will always be head banging throngs, spellbound audiences and (probably) jealous-eyed competitors to cheer you on. So, clean that dusty guitar, check your vocal range and head over to the Woodstock of the East. And if performing in front of an 8000-strong audience intimidates you, consider this as an open invite to be witness to some of the fiercest music competitions ever to take place in the country. After all, there is only one better thing than music – live music.
Light Music
Alankaar (LM Solo) – The mother of all solo-singing competitions. Any Indian language, any film, any album, any song. One person singing, one accompanying instrument. You choose.
Tarang (LM Group) - This Light Music Group, as it was called before, is bigger than ever before. Loads of prize money to be won, apart from the launch pad that the famous OAT stage provides.
Western Music
Decibels – A semi-professional event, for those who object to being called a college band. Its finals are widely regarded as a full-fledged rock show by the fans. The winner bags a recording deal, along with bucket loads of cash and goodies. And of course, there is the Title.
Powerchord – An event for the young and the restless, this is for all those who are proud of being their college’s band. And with the winner here getting a wildcard entry to the Decibels’ finals, no budding college band can afford to give this competition a miss.
Acoustyx – If you’d rather sit in a quiet auditorium and listen to the unplugged version of Hotel California, head over to Acoustyx, where electric guitars are taboo.
A Cappella – A unique event at Saarang, A Cappella requires group songs without instruments, using only vocals. Think Bohemian Rhapsody, Bacardi Song et al.
Cantata (WM Solo Vocals) – Any film, any album, any song, but in English. One person singing, one accompanying instrument. You choose.
Flying Solo (WM Instrumental) – Guitar, Drums, Keyboards, yes. But also, Saxophone, Bass and Violin. Think you have achieved mastery of these instruments? The Battle of the instrumentalists, at Étude.
Classical Music
Classical Instrumental – This comes in two flavours, percussion and non-percussion. Both are equally competitive and see a dedicated following that grows year on year.
Classical Vocals – An event for the fans of Indian Classical Vocals, both Carnatic and Hindustani. Challenging even to the most experienced, it has its own niche following.
