Classical Music

In a city recognised as the cultural capital of the country, the Classical Music Competitions at Saarang have emerged as the most competitive and yet the most enjoyable among the myriad others of their ilk. While remaining uncompromising on its strict adherence to tradition, this event still attracts a large attentive and appreciative audience. Scores of people, ranging from the unitiated tyro to the most ardent connoisseurs have been enthralled by the unrivalled quality of performances, year after year. Over the years, some of the most distinguished doyens of Carnatic Music have been invited to judge the competitions. These maestros have graced this event and inspired many others to excellence. With their erudition and astute judging criteria along with whole hearted encouragement, they have enabled participants to scale dizzying heights of excellence. The dazzling array of household names who have participated and won laurels, makes this event one of the most prestigious and popular ones at Saarang.

CLASSICAL MUSIC VOCALS

PRELIMS
  • Participants can sing any krithi of any composer.
  • Time: 5+1 minutes
  • Swarajathis (other than those of Shyamashastri), Varnas and geethas are not allowed.
FINALS
  • About 10-12 participants will make it into the finals from the prelims.
  • The participants HAVE to submit a list of 4 songs, all of different ragas, to the judges, before the commencement of the competition. No changes thereof will be allowed. The choice of the song(s) is going to be made by the judges.
  • Time: 13+2 minutes.
  • No restrictions on what needs to be rendered.

CLASSICAL MUSIC INSTRUMENTAL

NON-PERCUSSION
  • Wind instruments & String Instruments will be judged together.
  • PLEASE bring your own instruments. AVOID borrowing.
  • One person can participate only once, irrespective of how many instruments he has mastery over.
  • Regarding what songs are permissible, see Rule(iii) under Prelims section of Classical Vocals.
  • Time: 4+1 minutes.
PERCUSSION
  • Dhols, Thavils, Drums & Percussion Pads are not allowed.
  • The participants may play any tala of their choice, in either the Carnatic or Hindustani style.
  • Morsing is a VALID percussion instrument.
  • Time: 6+2 minutes.
  • Any sort of assistance to aid rhythm like music, rhythm clocks etc. are not allowed.

GENERAL INSTRUCTIONS

  • All registrations shall be on first come first serve basis.
  • Please avoid requests for rescheduling of your chances as far as possible. The number of participants will be quite huge & obliging for one shall mean obliging for everybody.
  • Stick to the time. Extension beyond the allotted time shall invite negative marks.
  • Electronic Shruthi Box shall be provided to all those who want to use it. The participant has to make arrangements for other accompaniments.
  • Coordinators have the right to modify rules to handle excessively large numbers, if the situation arises.
  • Judges’ decision shall be final in all respects & shall be accepted without question.
  • The Classical Music competition (vocal and instrumental) are strictly amateur events. Participation of performing artists and professionals is not encouraged.
